League members and guests are invited to our annual Media Lunch on Friday, February 13, 2026 at 11:30 a.m – 1:30 p.m.
We will also celebrate the League’s 106th and Oregon’s 167th birthdays which fall on Valentine’s Day.
Our topic this year will examine the current status and future opportunities of print journalism in Oregon. Panelists will discuss the role of print journalism as a tool for civic engagement and democracy. The panel includes:
- Moderator, Associate Professor Lee Shaker, Communications Department chair at Portland State University. His current research examines changing patterns of civic engagement in the United States.
- Emily Harris, co-founder and director of community journalism with Uplift Local which offers articles and information in the languages people prefer in their local communities.
- Donovan Scribes, award-winning writer, producer, and communications consultant. He has a column at the Portland Mercury examining culture, place and politics titled The Black Byline.
- Mark Zusman, editor at Willamette Week for more than 40 years and current co-owner. He is founder and president of the Oregon Journalism Project which is building a newsroom of enterprise and investigative journalists, covering the entire state, focused on accountability and solutions.
There will be time for socializing as well as for audience questions.
