We supported the proposed “Right to Know Who is Policing You” ordinance prohibiting facial coverings on law enforcement officers and requiring visible I.D.
The Portland Community and Public Safety Committee considered a proposed ordinance that would prohibit law enforcement from local, state, and federal agencies from wearing masks and require display of visible identification.
LWVPDX submitted a letter in support based on our belief in a criminal justice system that is just, effective, equitable, transparent, and fosters trust at all stages. The proposal addresses the issues of “transparency” and “trust” through the establishment of identity requirements and facial covering prohibitions for law enforcement.
