RCV team releases City Council survey

In April, the Ranked-Choice Voting team of League of Women Voters of Portland completed its report on the findings from its 2024 Portland City Council candidate survey project: The findings were based on 20 interviews—11 with elected City Councilors and 9 with candidates who came in between 4th and 7th place—conducted by RCV team members between January and March. The goal was to learn from the candidates in Portland’s first-ever multi-winner ranked-choice voting election whether the system lived up to its promise of lessening negative campaigning, increasing collaboration, and opening the door to new, more diverse candidates. Thursday, May 22 at the Laurelhurst Club Portland League members are invited to attend our Annual Membership Meeting on May 22 to celebrate Portland springing back as our new form of city government unfolds, we consolidate to a 501(c)3, and we welcome a new Board of Directors.  Annual Membership Meetings are an important opportunity for members to have a say in the League’s leadership and direction for the coming year. Defend voting rights across the U.S.

Action opportunity: Write to your Congressperson The week of March 31, the US House of Representatives is expected to consider the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act” (HR 22).  According to Nonprofit Vote and other sources, the bill would require proof of citizenship for registering to vote in any and all federal elections (which existing law already requires).  A comparable bill passed the House last year.
