Our November 20 Panel featured three amazing speakers

LWV of Portland’s November Community Education program, “2024 Election Reflection: Learning and Moving Forward,” was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, from 7 to 8:30 pm via Zoom.  Watch the video recording or listen to the podcast here!

This fall, Portland is facing big changes. Our election system is shifting to ranked-choice voting for the first time. In January, a new form of city government will be in place. As the ballots are counted and the impacts of this election set in, our panel helps offer perspective, learning, and hope on the other side.

  • How did we do in our city’s first ranked-choice election?
  • What do we expect from this first crop of city officials taking office in the new form of government?
  • What local impacts will we see from the national election results?

Our Speakers

This webinar will bring new perspectives on the impacts of the November election in our city:

  • Candace Avalos, former Charter Commissioner and newly elected City Councilor for District 1
    • Candace Avalos (she/her) is a first generation American “Blacktina”, daughter of Black Americans from the south and Guatemalan immigrants. Prior to her venture into the nonprofit world as the Executive Director of Verde, an environmental justice non-profit, she worked at Portland State University for 8 years providing civic engagement education and advising support for student leaders. She lives in East Portland and is an active member of her community, serving on various boards like charter reform, police accountability, and several community based nonprofits like Street Roots and the Coalition of Communities of Color. In January she will begin her new role representing East Portland on City Council for District 1.
  • Jennifer Parrish Taylor, Director of Advocacy and Civic Engagement, Urban League of Portland
    • Jennifer Parrish Taylor brings over a decade of community and political organizing experience in communities of color. Jennifer grew up in Portland, Oregon, an experience that shaped and informed her outlook and served as the catalyst of her passion to commit herself to issues of social justice. Jennifer currently serves as the Director of Advocacy and Public Policy with the Urban League of Portland, one of the oldest civil rights and service organizations in the area. As early champions for fair housing and inclusive employment, the Urban League of Portland helped identify and correct discriminatory practices and policies commonly used to oppress Black people around the state and throughout the nation. Influencing policy on the local, state and national levels remains a critical part of our work to this day.
  • Alex Zielinksi, OPB Politics Reporter
    • Alex Zielinski covers Portland city politics for Oregon Public Broadcasting. She’s covered the city on and off for over a decade, including five years as the Portland Mercury’s news editor. Alex has also worked as a journalist in San Antonio, Texas, and Washington, D.C. She graduated from the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication in 2011.

The panel answered audience questions, to help our community process the election and find important lessons.
