Friday report from President Audrey:
Your three dedicated Portland delegates have happily joined another dozen Oregonians at the LWVUS national convention in Columbus, Ohio.
We are spending three days debating motions, making amendments, and voting on everything from bylaws changes to the programmatic focus for the coming two years. That is, it’s a trip only a League diehard would love. 🙂
Actually, it’s more inspiring than it might sound. Delegates passed a concurrence to adopt a position from Washington affirming the rights of immigrants. Testimony in favor of that position brought tears to many eyes, as we refuse to turn away from the violence and dehumanization our neighbors are experiencing.
On the first evening, guest speakers included executive directors from some of the League’s national organizational partners: YWCA, AAUW (American Association of University Women), and the National Council of Jewish Women. Their words were moving, but even more inspiring was the reminder of the League’s powerful collaborations with like-minded organizations, each advancing their own part of the work, but working together to create more inclusive and empowered communities with leaders of all genders.
CEO Celina Stewart brought us hope with her words of challenge and encouragement: “We have the privilege of being in this moment and being able to change history.”
