LWV Statement on Kobach Request for Voter Records

League Opposes Kobach Request for Voter Records

On June 30,  League of Women Voters of the U.S. president Chris Carson released a statement on Kris Kobach’s request for every state’s voter records and the Elections Integrity Commission.

“There is no justification for this giant fishing expedition. The Commission itself is a distraction from the real issue of voter suppression, and that efforts to ‘investigate voter fraud’ threaten our most fundamental voting rights…

“State laws govern the release of voter registration information, and, at a minimum, election officials must follow those laws before releasing data. The League stands with those state leaders who have already come out to support their voters and refuse these requests from Mr. Kobach and the EIC.”

Recognizing our Volunteers

As a volunteer organization, we are very grateful for the thousands of hours more than 100 Portland League members contribute to promoting civic engagement in our county.

On June 6, we presented our 2016-17 Volunteer of the Year award to Art Wilson for his outstanding work managing the distribution of the printed editions of the LWVPDX nonpartisan Voters’ Guide for the 2016 Primary and General Elections and the May 2017 Special Election.

“Volunteering is the ultimate experience in democracy. You vote in elections, but when you volunteer, you vote every day for the kind of community you want to live in.” (unknown author)

The LWV of Portland mourns for the men killed and injured, and the two women they were trying to defend, all of whom were victims in a racially driven brutal attack May 26 on Portland’s public transit system. We extend our deepest sympathy to the victims’ families and the survivors.

The League denounces the violence of this attack. We reaffirm the League’s support of equal rights for all and the importance of speaking out against hate and violence.

We are proud that we just received a grant from the Multnomah Bar Foundation to improve our communications, including this website.
