Discussion by area educators

A panel of educators will address the topic of the impact of the role of the federal government on education for League members and the general public on October 11th.

The League of Women Voters of Portland is part of a nation-wide study by the League of Women Voters of the United States to examine the impact of the role of the federal government on education. A panel of educators will address the topic for League members and the general public on October 11th.
Pat Burk, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education, Portland State University will lead the panel. Professor Burk was appointed in 2002 to the post of Associate State Superintendent for Federal Programs and in 2003 was appointed Chief Policy Officer for the Oregon Department of Education.
Following Dr. Burk’s framework presentation, leading Portland educators will discuss theimpact of the federal government on the local education environment.
Gwen Sullivan, Interim President of the Portland Association of Teachers will discuss the impact of the federal role in education on teaching.
Charlene Bassine, Assistant Principal of David Douglas High School will discuss the
impact of the federal role in education on how schools operate.
Mark Hansen, a member of the Steering Committee of the Portland Area Rethinking
Schools, will discuss the perspective of this reform organization.
The League of Women Voters is a public policy organization. It works to promote
political responsibility through informed and active participation in government.
This event will be taped and televised on MetroEast Community Media during the
several weeks following the meeting. It will also be available on www.lwvpdx.org.
