Jewel Lansing, local author and long time League member, is offering an unusual gift to the Portland League of Women Voters. She will work with local book groups, sell autographed copies of her book, Portland: People, Politics, and Power, 1851-2001, and donate her royalties on LWV sales to the League of Women Voters of Portland.
Any book group who selects Lansing's book for their 2009-2010 book list can pre-order and pay for the book by sending $25 per copy to LWV Portland, before August 15, 2009. For groups buying eight or more copies, Lansing will personally attend the book group's meeting and discuss both the book and her writing life.
An alternative for any size group is to request and pay for autographed copies of the book, or even specially crafted messages for the book group, or gifts.
Book groups who want to participate should give contact information for one person in the book group and write one check for the combined total of books to be ordered ($25 per copy), made out and sent to LWV Portland, P.O. Box 3491, Portland, OR 97208, by August 15, 2009.
Portland: People, Politics, and Power, 1851-2001, published by the Oregon State University Press in 2003 and 2005, is often quoted in the media (and the author interviewed) when controversies arise in city politics and a historical perspective is needed. Lansing's book is an enjoyable, easy-to-read snapshot of local politics that will give book group readers deeper familiarity with how their city works. The author is the former Multnomah County and City of Portland Auditor. Visit her website at: www.jewellansing.com
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government.
