The Russians Arrive!

Back row: Andrey Tarasov and Alexandr Mefodyev Front row: Veronika Trushkova, Andy Fink, Irina Malinina, and Sergey Yeger. The banner was painted by Pat Osborn, LWV coordinator and Kcenia Dunn-Bernstein, daughter in one of the two host families.
Our six Russian guests arrived Saturday at 2 pm, after beginning their trip with a gathering in Moscow earlier in the week, flying to Washington DC on Thursday, Oct 8, spending Friday touring and learning there, and catching an early morning flight to Portland today. Despite the extensive air time and jet lag they seem excited to be here and eager to start their work of touring. We learned that Andy Fink, our facilitator, has previously hosted 18 different Open World groups. After studying the profiles of our delegates it is gratifying to actually meet them. They seem very interested in the activities we have planned. In discussing free time and their choice of activities, they were more interested in seeing a recycling center than going dancing! Yet they are charming and funny also. They are having a relaxing dinner tonight with their two host families and will gather tomorrow morning for a trip to the coast.
